It’s very easy for businesses, instructors and self-defence experts to sell women’s self-defence (WSD) courses through fear-mongering. Flashes of video clips showing people (not just women) getting attacked and then cutting away to the experts showing some elaborate technique that is impressive, but with an undercurrent tone of “this-is-so-simple-you-should-have-done-this…”, ultimately leaving you with the feeling of “I can’t do that”.
In full disclosure, we do run self-defence courses and weekly classes exclusively catered for women and would love nothing more than to see more women sign up and train with us. In fact, we have a course that just started on Sunday, 27th March!
The techniques that we teach on the course and in our classes are essential fundamentals. These are techniques that have been proven effective in pressured situations, time and time again for different people from all walks of life, with different movement mechanics. It is essential to understand that techniques are skills and mastery of skills takes time. Undertaking a Self-defence course is a great start to lay the foundation.
Women who join us on their self-defence journey start due to a variety of reasons. Some have experienced situations where they felt unsafe or were hurt. Some know of others close to them who have been in gnarly situations and want to take that proactive step. Others are wanting to get fit, connect with other women or spend time with daughters, sisters and friends.
Some participants gained self-confidence and some of this manifested through furthering their fitness and martial arts journey. For others, completing RDA’s Women’s Self Defence course was an important step in personal growth and self-confidence.
Our ultimate goal at the end of the course is for participants to walk away EMPOWERED. For our participants to have a couple of techniques that they are confident to execute should the need arise. All our coaches understand the sensitive nature of why women undertake self-defence training. This awareness ensures that we practice inclusivity in all our classes at RDA.
For us here at RDA, the real value of WSD is the increased confidence, personal growth and safety of all our participants past and present.
